Compare and Contrast
After reading how visual literacy is defined in Visual Literacy: learning to see, I also learned a different interpretation from Brian Kennedy. Like any type of mastery the importance and the use of it is always different and the route to achieve such mastery is always different as well. However; how big is the difference and how does it impact the world?

The International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) defines visual literacy as a group of vision-related competencies a human being can develop by seeing, and at the same time, having and integrating other sensory experiences. Enabling a visually literate person to discriminate and interpret the visible actions, objects, and symbols that he/she encounters . . . to communicate with others . . . and comprehend and enjoy visual communication.

Brian Kennedy defines visual literacy as the ability to construct meaning from images. It’s not a skill; it uses skills as a toolbox. It’s a form of critical thinking that enhances your intellectual capacity. So what do both definitions have in common and what is different?

Both definitions express that vision is a tool that is utilized to take in information. Both disagree what is down with the information taking in. IVLA express that our visual capabilities is part of the visual literacy. Brian Kennedy believes that intelligence influences your visual literacy.

Brian Kennedy explanation of visual literacy speaks to me the most because I see is, as many things that we can all do like running. We can all run but not all of us can be a marathon runner or an Olympic runner. We all can see but we don’t interpret the same thing. I also believe that beside been able to see something that others cant I can also get a different feeling form seen something; just like the connotation of a word.
